MH Clinical Guide - Assessing for ADHD & Autism

Mental Health - Clinical Guides:

ADHD & Autism

With recent social media campaigns about ADHD and Autism, and high profile celebrities talking about their struggles and their diagnosis, we have seen an increase in patients asking for ADHD and Autism referrals.

There will be many people who will not fit the criteria for diagnosis, however most health professionals in the field feel that it is a good thing that people are asking the question and looking into the conditions.

There will be many undiagnosed people in the community, and often the difficulties they face will have had a huge impact on their function in society, on their relationships, their jobs, financial aspects, and receiving a diagnosis and support can make a huge difference to them and people around them.

ADHD and Autism co-exist with many Mental Health conditions - most often anxiety, health anxiety, depression and personality disorders - so it is very useful to reflect on your patients and possibly consider the conditions in context of neurodiversity.

Would an assessment or diagnosis help your patient in managing their mental health conditions better?
