Support for Adults 65+

Older adults' mental health

The elderly often have other physical health problems, chronic pain or memory loss compounding any mental health problems.

The stigma of asking for help for low mood or anxiety is often ingrained from childhood.

Around 50% of people over the age of 65 in Coventry live alone.

Age UK Coventry & Warwickshire offer a confidential and professional counselling service for individuals age 65 and over.

How can we help?

The Counselling Service can support people who may be experiencing anxiety, stress, depression, bereavement and difficult emotions such as low self-esteem. We can also support carers who are finding their role challenging.

What to expect from counselling:

You will be encouraged to talk about your feelings and emotions with a trained therapist, who will listen and support you without judging or criticising.

How is it delivered?

The service is being delivered via telephone or video link.

Our Counsellors

All of our volunteer counsellors are trained or have placements with us and are supervised in line with the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) and follow the code of ethics and good practice.

Costs

The service is free. However, donations are always welcome.

Good Neighbours Coventry

Good Neighbours is simple: we connect over 50s to befrienders, building positive relationships across the city. Following the success of Good Neighbours in Coventry, we have now begun a new Good Neighbours project in Bedworth.

In 2021 alone, we connected 609 over 50s to befrienders.

A lonely 65-year-old finds friendship, laughter and new courage with a 30-something befriender. In Coventry city centre, a woman receives prayer for healing. A family trapped in poverty by their debts finds a way out through free, expert debt management support.

These are just some of the results of HOPE Coventry’s work in Coventry.

Referring an older person to Good Neighbours couldn’t be easier. Just complete the Referral Form to get started, or alternatively download the full referral form.

Social Prescribing in Primary Care

Social prescribing is a way of linking patients in primary care with sources of support within the community. It provides GPs with a non-medical referral option that can operate alongside existing treatments to improve health and well-being

Role of the Social Navigator

  • A Social Navigator will contact the patient to arrange a convenient appointment.
  • A Wellbeing Guided Conversation (holistic assessment) will be completed at the first visit to identify goals, aims and agree an action plan.
  • The Social Navigator will link the patient to a Social Buddy, befriending, friendship groups/activities, exercise classes, information & advice, home support, meals service, benefit entitlement check.

Referrals

To Age UK Coventry from GP’s, Practice Nurses & Staff using a secure NHS email account with patient consent

About Carers Trust

Carers Trust is a major charity for, with and about carers. We work to improve support, services, and recognition for anyone living with the challenges of caring, unpaid, for a family member or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or addiction problems. Our vision is that unpaid carers count and can access the help they need to live their lives.

How does Carers Trust help unpaid carers locally

The local services offered by each Carers Trust Network Partner vary. Services might include:

  • Emotional and practical support for carers - including care in the home to enable carers to take a break;
  • Carers emergency services, outreach work in GP surgeries, hospitals and schools to reach cares who haven’t come forward;
  • Information and advice on issues such as benefits, grants and other help available
  • Giving carers a voice;
  • Helping carers to share experiences through group support and socials; providing access to education, training and employment
  • Supporting young carers through preventative, whole family work and clubs, activities and mentoring in schools.

Many Network Partners also offer regulated services, meaning they provide the special quality of care that gives carers the peace of mind to let someone else care for their family member or friend.
